When AI-forged audio and video and malicious editing make truth hard to tell, Atomic Presence uses cryptographic hash chains and digital signatures to defend the authenticity of what you recorded.
Why it was made#
A certain generation of Gemini’s image synthesis became extremely realistic, and I think everyone needs a tool to distinguish the real from the synthetic. The tool has to step in at the moment of recording, because forensic analysis after the fact is already too late.
The trigger was seeing news footage of an incident where the person involved was being filmed by many phones, with a very unequal balance of power over how it would spread. The people filming can cut and caption; the person filmed only has their own copy.
Who it is for#
People on the receiving end of a confrontation. Interviewees who do not want to be cut or forged at will. And speedrunners, who need to prove a recording was not tampered with.
How it was done, and where it got stuck#
The approach is to stamp a QR code and an audio watermark while recording, then chain the recorded content with hashes and sign it, so any segment that is cut or replaced no longer matches.
The review pitfall was the copy. Apple does not accept “anti”-style negative wording. In something like anti-XXX, the XXX itself is not allowed to appear, and the whole thing has to be phrased positively. “Anti-deepfake” failed review because “deepfake” is in it, so in the end it had to be described sideways.
Where it stands#
Next is improving performance and recording length, and hardening the cryptography against adversaries.
