Eight iOS apps — all free, no ads, no tracking. Pick one and try it. Also a running log of how a humanities-background sysadmin builds apps from scratch with AI vibe coding. I also take fixed-scope agent-automation commissions — see Services.

This is the origin of Gantt Planet (motivation, audience, difficulties, current state), not a how-to. To download and try it → see the App. The indie developer’s niche and trade-offs are covered more fully in an earlier post.

Gantt Planet is 3D habit tracking plus an AI confessional, turning self-discipline into a quiet interstellar adventure.

Why it was made
#

Because every free Gantt chart app is painful to use, so I wanted to build my own. Partway in, I found that connecting to all the external systems (Google Calendar and the like) was too much trouble, and turned it into an app focused only on the “important but not urgent” items. The Gantt skeleton is still there; it just no longer tries to integrate with the outside.

The real decision to keep going came after the 3D view of the railway inside the planet came out. That was the moment it was clear the thing could stand.

Who it is for
#

Everyone. Everyone needs to notice the important-but-not-urgent things in their life, the ones with no deadline that therefore always come last.

How it was done, and where it got stuck
#

Technically, the tracked items stay in sync between the 3D view and the table: change the table and the planet changes, progress on the planet writes back to the table.

The 3D part is hard to get AI to finish on its own and needs rounds of manual tuning. The automatic weather detection also gets rejected by Apple easily, because it needs location permission, and a reviewer cannot see why a habit app should know where you are.

Where it stands
#

I would like a friends system, so you can visit a friend’s planet. And a planet-building system, so the planet gradually fills with the scenery and furniture each user likes.
